Québec composer Martin Leclerc’s Horizons du Silence: six works from 2000 to 2005, every one a Hugh Le Caine Award winner, drawing on Enki Bilal, Thoreau and Neruda, with a piece for amplified trumpet played by Pascal Leprohon. DVD-Audio.

Horizons du Silence presents six works by Martin Leclerc composed between 2000 and 2005, most of them at the studio of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal while he was studying with Yves Daoust. Each one received a prize at the Hugh Le Caine Awards of the SOCAN Foundation for young composers. Leclerc's stated interest is in turning concrete matter into musical objects while playing with meaning, with film and poetry as constant references.

À l'horizon du silence (2001-02), for amplified trumpet and tape, starts from the trumpets of Jericho in the Book of Joshua and the violence of human rivalry, set in a dense counterpoint of urban and media sounds; it is played by Pascal Leprohon. L'Odyssée (2002-03) draws coldness, anxiety, horror and madness from Enki Bilal's comic story La chose à venir, in five tableaux. Sauf dans la brume (2005), a Réseaux commission, is about solitude, his own and that of Thoreau's Walden and Neruda's memoirs.

Pièce pour petites oreilles (2003-04) imagines how sounds reach a baby's highly sensitive ears, where the smallest event can seem gigantic. … et le ça (2000-01) moves through mental states from fear to joy. Il y a… il y avait des fleurs (2000), dedicated to his mother, is a dramatic programme piece on modern humankind built on Leclerc's own poem Les enrobés, which he reads himself. The DVD-Audio runs to 81 minutes in 96 kHz, 24-bit stereo.

Born in Quebec City in 1976, Leclerc studied classical guitar at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and completed his master's at the Montréal conservatory in 2004. He still plays guitar in several groups, and his work extends to theatre, dance and cinema.

“Maneggiare le releases di casa empreintes DIGITALes significa confrontarsi con alcune tra le più interessanti proposte della musica concreta contemporanea, con tutte le difficoltà del caso, e la prova specifica del francofono Martin Leclerc rientra pienamente in quest’ottica: un piatto ricco, questo Horizons du Silence, che se certamente non rivoluziona le sorti e le mire di un settore complesso e”
