Debut solo album by Montréal sound artist Diego Bermudez Chamberland: a 44-minute acousmatic work in three movements (2020-23, revised 2025) freely inspired by the Norse cosmos of Snorri Sturluson’s Edda, moving from the scale of Yggdrasil to the microscopic. CD-R.

Cartografía Interior is the first solo album by Diego Bermudez Chamberland, a single acousmatic work in three movements composed between 2020 and 2023 at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and in his own studio, and revised in 2025. It grew from the books on Norse mythology he read as a child, and takes its cue from Snorri Sturluson’s Edda (1220): many worlds, mythical creatures, the constant struggle of good and evil. Bermudez Chamberland insists the piece is a free, personal adaptation rather than an illustration, built around three listening points at different scales.

Chronomundo, the prologue, is anchored to Yggdrasil, the cosmic ash tree that joins all the worlds, and works with textural masses that suggest the Big Bang, planetary motion or geological formation. Destin // Trouble moves closer to the activity of those worlds, with mobile materials, calls and responses, “woody” sounds modelled on plant growth, the beating of insect wings and passages drawn from snowstorms, sandstorms and cyclones; it won a 3rd prize ex æquo at the CEC’s Jeu de temps / Times Play in 2021. Punto maximal reaches the closest point, a microscopic world as busy as the infinitely large, marked by small iterative dots of sound, and won a prize at Young Lion*ess of Acousmatic Music 2022 in Vienna.

Alongside synthesis, the work uses recordings of natural elements and acoustic instruments played by collaborators, among them Mathieu Lavoie, Geneviève Larochelle-Guy, Jean-François Laporte and Diane Daher. Mastering sessions were held with Simon Lévesque.

Born in Montréal in 1993, Bermudez Chamberland is a Latino-Québécois sound artist working across composition, performance, experimental instrument making and electronic music. He studied digital music at the Université de Montréal with Nicolas Bernier and Jean Piché, then electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire with Martin Bédard and Louis Dufort.

“An interesting release, but certainly one I’d need to be prepared for and in the mood!”

“This album simply hands you the coordinates and says: explore.”

“Gletscher prallen aufeinander, Eis und Schnee fliegen umher und in den Wäldern ist der Teufel los. Wir können die Gedanken von Diego Bermudez Chamberland zu seinem Projekt lesen, doch die Räume, die er erschaffen hat, müssen wir selbst mit unseren Assoziationen füllen.”
