Into the Forest is a cycle of four acousmatic works by Louis Dufort, about 40 minutes in all, inspired by countless treks in the Canadian Rockies and in Québec’s boreal forest. Dufort describes his interest as holistic: the structure and organic growth of the forest, its colours and smells, and its power to reflect our own nature back at us. The pieces were developed over several years, presented as works in progress in 2016 and 2017-18, then revised and finalised in 2020-21 in his Montréal studio.
Into, the opener and the most pastoral part of the cycle, includes elements from his earlier Nervures (2009). Into the forest my wounded arms wide open opens a cathartic space where the human psyche faces an imperial forest; a draft was heard at Électrochoc 6 at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in 2016. Into the forest moves into microstructures and their metaphorical echoes, setting a complex nature beside a dreamlike one, and Into the forest I’ve seen under, the most abstract piece, brings organic, synthetic and musical materials together. Both were first presented as drafts at the Ultrasons festival in 2018. The album was a finalist for the Prix Opus 2021-22 for album of the year.
Born in Montréal in 1970, Dufort writes fixed-media, mixed and visual music as well as installations, and has worked with Compagnie Marie Chouinard since 1996. In 2018 he composed the soundtrack for Denys Arcand’s film La chute de l’empire américain. He teaches composition at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and is artistic director of the Akousma festival.
