Hymnes sans Paroles collects six stereo works for fixed medium that Adam Stanović composed between 2017 and 2022, in residencies and studios in Aldeburgh, Brooklyn, Ohio, Sydney and above all at the University of Sheffield Sound Studios (USSS), where he taught for ten years. Several are tributes to friends and colleagues, and the whole collection is dedicated to his wife Inja Stanović.
We are the Voices of the Wandering Wind started with a high whistle of wind through a gap in the studio window during the 2018 Klingler ElectroAcoustic Residency in Ohio, heard again months later, soft and low, in Lisbon. Helix takes its title and form from a method of chaining materials and rotating them around a central axis; under its working title it won a second prize ex æquo at SYNC.2018. Baltazar’s Adventure through The Great Machine, commissioned by the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, follows a fictional character through the museum’s industrial machines “in search of its beating, mechanical heart”.
Goodnight, Tin Hau, a GRM commission, uses recordings made on sleepless nights in Causeway Bay during his visits to Hong Kong between 2016 and 2020, shaped into an arch form and coloured by the changing political situation there. To US.S..S..., his parting gift to USSS, opens with a pastiche of Adrian Moore’s Counterattack and refers to about thirty of his students. Hymn Without Words is dedicated to Dale Jonathan Perkins after his heart attack in 2019 and draws on his cycle Voice Without Words.
