Six acousmatic works by Georges Forget from 2007 to 2014, each prefaced by a text: a city falling asleep, a war piece after Ernst Jünger and Terrence Malick, and a long sea piece under Melville where a little girl sings to the ocean.

Le Dernier Présent collects six acousmatic works that Georges Forget composed in his Montréal studio between 2007 and 2014. Each is introduced in the booklet by a literary epigraph, from prose poems by Wahed Gotref to Charles Baudelaire, Olivier de Kersauson and Herman Melville, which set the mood rather than a programme.

Urban Adagio (2010), commissioned by Codes d’accès, follows a tired city slowly falling asleep at night; it won an award at Música Viva in Portugal. Métal en bouche, dedicated to Martin Bédard, won a 1st prize ex æquo at the Luigi Russolo-Rossana Maggia competition in 2011. Une île was commissioned by the IMEB in Bourges and made during a residency at the University of Birmingham studios. Orages d’acier (2007), dedicated to his father, draws on Ernst Jünger’s Storm of Steel and Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line: hallucinatory bursts of violence separated by long stretches of tense waiting, closing on a quotation from Les oies sauvages, a song of the French Foreign Legion. Seul et septembre, begun in 2008 and finished in 2014, is heard under Baudelaire’s The Invitation to the Voyage. The longest piece, L’appel (2008), sails under the opening of Moby Dick, with Gabrielle Forget, a little girl, singing to the ocean.

Born in Niort, France, in 1978, Forget took a unanimous first prize in electroacoustic composition with Christian Éloy at the Bordeaux conservatoire, moved to Québec in 2001 for a master’s with Robert Normandeau, and completed a PhD under Isabelle Panneton and Jean Piché. He teaches at the Université de Montréal.

“… the corresponding result is an alternation between harrowing, ballistic frenzy and scenes of dead air that lashes together emotions such as revelry, violence and horror as definitively as anywhere else on this fine collection.”

Cléo Palacio-Quintin, Circuit

“… immergé dans des sonorités grandioses et lumineuses, plongé dans un état d’apesanteur à la fois déstabilisant et apaisant.”

Richard Allen, A Closer Listen

“With tracks inspired by a Terence Malick film, a Melville novel, and poems by Baudelaire and the French sailing champion Olivier de Kersauson, Le dernier présent wears its literary heart on its sleeve.”
