Annette Vande Gorne's 57-minute Haïkus (2016-20), five Japanese seasons in 17 short tableaux for 16 channels, where studio landscapes meet traces of Debussy, Vivaldi, Honegger, Messiaen and Jean-Michel Jarre, with tributes to Pierre Henry and Bernard Parmegiani.

Haïkus is a single 57-minute acousmatic work by Annette Vande Gorne, realized between 2016 and 2020 at the Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio in Ohain and premiered complete at the Espace du son festival in Brussels in October 2020. Inspired by the brevity of the haiku and its long resonance in the imagination, it moves through the five Japanese seasons (New Year’s Day counts as one) in 17 short tableaux, spread over 16 channels in concert. It is dedicated to François Bayle and his research on the sound-image.

The idea is to bring the historical European repertoire and acousmatic studio writing as close together as possible. Feux d’artifice (d’après Debussy) takes the piano prelude as its temporal and structural frame. Printemps sets fragments of shakuhachi, Messiaen, Ravel and R Murray Schafer beside composed soundscapes. In Été the dynamics come from Schumann, Ligeti, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev, among others. Automne includes Jeux mécaniques, after Honegger’s Pacific 231, and Jeux répétés, a tribute to Pierre Henry with sitar by Mark Bogaert. Hiver, commissioned by Ina-GRM, ends with Jeux de sons, a tribute to Bernard Parmegiani that borrows from De natura sonorum. The work closes on temple bells from many regions for Japanese New Year’s midnight. The album won the Octaves de la musique 2021 for contemporary music album of the year.

Born in Charleroi in 1946, Vande Gorne studied at the conservatories of Mons and Brussels and with Jean Absil, then composition with Guy Reibel and Pierre Schaeffer in Paris after discovering acousmatic music through Bayle and Henry. In 1982 she founded Musiques & Recherches and its studio, and later the Espace du son festival with its 60-loudspeaker acousmonium.

Rigobert Dittmann, Bad Alchemy
