Emma Margetson's Contemplations: nine acousmatic works from 2014 to 2022 on the passing of time, from a ticking metronome and a suspended cymbal to a bicycle in Hamburg’s Elbe tunnel and chalk on paper after a Wyndham Lewis sketch. CD-R.

Contemplations gathers nine works that Emma Margetson composed between 2014 and 2022, almost all realized at the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham and the last at the University of Greenwich. She describes the album as one of introspection, charting a decade of work with sound, from objects to places and from feelings to experiences. Several pieces were written for 8 or 16 channels or in ambisonics and are presented here in stereo.

The passing of time runs through the whole record, which opens with Tick, made from the sounds of a metronome, and closes with Elapsing, about memories that feel recent and are already fading. Between them, Abstracted Objects reuses coins, foil, cellophane and bubblewrap recorded in a workshop with the Barber Collective, and received a special mention at the Métamorphoses competition in 2020. Water Waves won the Excellence in Sound Art & Sound Design Prize at the klingt gut ! Young Artist Award in 2018, and Cimbaal takes close-up recordings of a suspended cymbal to other worlds.

Isochrone combines a bicycle recorded at close range with the 426-metre Elbe tunnel in Hamburg and draws on a short poem by Atticus. Distorted Illusions, a prize winner at Ars Electronica Forum Wallis in 2019, moves between field recordings and close-up sounds like a series of dreams. Sketching Froanna, commissioned by the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, responds to Wyndham Lewis’s sketch of his wife, using chalk on paper, blue noise and electronic sounds.

Born in Derby in 1993, Margetson studied with Annie Mahtani and Scott Wilson at the University of Birmingham, completing her doctorate in 2021. She is Senior Lecturer in Music and Sound at the University of Greenwich and co-directs the Loudspeaker Orchestra Concert Series.

CD-R edition in OGpak, empreintes DIGITALes IMED 24189, 2024.

… I like her understated outlook on the world.Read more

Contemplations is a survey of electro-acoustic compositions by Emma Margetson from Derby (UK), dating from 2015 to 2022. Mostly she used very simple means — close-miked objects, concentrating on one subject per composition, no especially radical changes and no foregone conclusions about what the work “means”. By the time of 2019’s Sketching Froanna she attempts an ambitious eight-channel composition, responding to the lines and shapes of an artwork by Wyndham Lewis. If there’s an underlying theme to Margetson’s observations, it’s about introspection and reflection, linked to the passing of time. Some pieces might be prosaic and descriptive, but I like her understated outlook on the world.

Absolut atemberaubend!

Bei Isochrone mischen sich Geräusche eines Fahrrads mit dem Verkehr im Hamburger Elbtunnel und Poesie des Instagram-Poeten Atticus: Life is a tunnel / not a cave / keep walking / and you will find again / the light / you left behind.

A wide-ranging electroacoustic performance artist, Emma hails from Derby (England) but studied her art in Birmingham, and has since worked at many other places.

As with fellow empreintes DIGITALes artist Ingrid Drese, this would seem to be Emma’s solo album debut, but unlike Ingrid’s long-form minutes, all of which are of a quite dynamic and sometimes startling nature, mixing up the obvious and the vastly manipulated. Thus she’s Leicester’s Louise Rossiter in her approach.

There’s certainly a lot to take-in when listening to works as dramatically crafted as these, which of course makes it engaging and well worth repeated listening.

Reeds in Tick, “a piece made of sounds of a ticking metronome. Shifting, splintering, and refracting via the temporal and spatial domain” horen we dat mooi terug. Bij Distorted Illusions schrijft de componiste: “The sensations of falling, walking, moving vehicles, flowing water… what does this symbolise in our dreams? What images and thoughtsdoes this evoke as we meander through the conscious-unconsciousstates of our minds? Awake? Or still dreaming?”
