Assemblance(s) collects eight acousmatic works by James Andean, written between 2010 and 2018, most of them at Studio Erkki of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and premiered in the Acousmatica concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre. The last, Valdrada, was made in Leicester, where he now teaches. Each piece starts from a sharply defined source and follows it somewhere else.
Déchirure was composed for the Presque rien 2013 project, which opened Luc Ferrari’s sound archives to new works; its tearings are musical, personal and literal, and it won 2nd prize at the Prix biennal Presque rien. Hyvät matkustajat began as a sonic postcard from Finland made of field recordings, then turned inward towards spectral landscapes. Valdrada takes its title and its theme of memory from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. Psygeío grew from a quick recording of the refrigerator hum in the Old Jesuit Monastery at Áno Sýros, made during a residency spent mostly recording wind. Spores is built only from short passages recorded inside a piano, first premiered at the Spor Festival in Aarhus as half of a dual work. Maledetta treats the voice of Maria Callas as Cherubini’s Medea and a piano reduction, in a portrait of Medea’s shifting states. Medusan Torso fixes on a timeline the material of an installation made with visual artist Merja Nieminen. Between the Leaves began when an output error turned a recording of John Cage speaking into noise, in Cage’s centenary year; it slows to a halt two thirds of the way through, then runs back to where it began.
Born in Ottawa in 1972, Andean studied at McGill University in Montréal and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and lectures at De Montfort University in Leicester. He works in acousmatic music and improvisation, and is a founding member of groups including Rank Ensemble, LOS Duo and VCA.
