Four works by Monique Jean from 2015 to 2024, three built on MissTake, her no-input four-track tape recorder with effects pedals, including Volt_#1 and Volt_#3, plus Tumultes, inspired by novels by Adania Shibli and Antoine Wauters. CD-R.

Malgré Tout brings together four works by Monique Jean composed between 2015 and 2024. Three of them draw mostly on MissTake, the improvisation device she developed during her PhD: a no-input four-track tape recorder fed into an intermodulation system of effects pedals and multichannel spatialization software. She chose this lo-fi analogue setup for its erratic, unstable behaviour and its raw, untamed sounds, which let her work on hybridity and heterogeneity. The fourth, Tumultes, is a recent piece.

Volt_#1, the first of a series based on self-made devices that recreate the unpredictability of analogue synthesizers, takes rough, noisy sounds treated with feedback into the time and structure of an electroacoustic piece without losing their improvised nature; it was a finalist at Musica Nova 2015 and revised in 2024. Volt_#3, conceived for 16 channels, imagines an empty public square still vibrating with the crowd that just left it. Dancing on the Edge of Darkness is the music of a five-screen video work with the artist Monique Bertrand, built around Hamlet as a runaway teenager, with short-circuits, interference and sudden stops held at a constant density.

Tumultes, in memory of Serge Arcuri, was inspired by two novels, Adania Shibli’s Minor Detail and Antoine Wauters’s Mahmoud ou la montée des eaux, and asks how to keep seeking a path to the other despite dams, walls and censorship. It premiered at Akousma 20 in Montréal in 2024.

Born in Caraquet, New Brunswick, in 1960, Monique Jean studied electroacoustic composition at the Université de Montréal with Francis Dhomont and completed a PhD under Nicolas Bernier. She plays in the improvisation quartet Theresa Transistor, and her album Greffes won a Prix Opus in 2012-13.

Monique Jean is a Montréal-based composer who studied electroacoustic composition at the University of Montréal under Francis Dhomont. Her output spans acousmatic works, sound installations, and improvisation. Denis Dufour and Thomas Brando named her among the newer generations of acousmatic composers.

Malgré tout is her most recent release, consisting of four electroacoustic pieces. At least parts of these were based around her custom no-input four-channel tape machine that applies non-linear filtering, spatialization, and other effects to create sounds generatively. These appear as drones, spectral sweeps, cosmic tones, and granular textures that move across the sound field. Atop this, Jean adds other effects, such as feedback and vocalizations.

The results vary between something close to ambient music and accretive structures that seek out a form before crumbling. The album can be thought of as a series of condensation / dissolution cycles that might mimic certain natural patterns, but are clearly synthetic. Put another way, the straining of sounds against one another, to the point of cracking apart before colliding together again, appears organic as it grows and mutates. The unpredictability of these transitions breaks the sonic fragments into sub-atomic pieces before using them to reconstruct a new reality.

Malgré tout will be released on October 7 by empreintes DIGITALes. Jean’s shimmering, echoing, and fluttering soundscapes are well worth the listening effort even as they unpredictably deconstruct and reform.
