A ten-year retrospective of Monique Jean, 2000 to 2011: two acousmatic works framing three mixed pieces where tenor saxophone (André Leroux), electric guitar (Tim Brady) and bass clarinet (Lori Freedman) are grafted onto processing and fixed sounds. DVD-Audio.
Greffes (Grafts) covers ten years of work by Monique Jean, from 2000 to 2011. The title is her own botanical metaphor: instruments, live processing and installation work grafted onto an acousmatic trunk, blurring its outline. The materials are rough and raw, driven by a muffled pulse. The album won the Prix Opus 2012-13 for album of the year and is dedicated to Monique Bertrand, who made the cover.
Givre (2011), dedicated to Tedi Tafel, comes from the Calendar project, twelve site-specific performances with the choreographer following the seasons in the city: March, the inside of an ice mass, creaks and cracks of the thaw. The three grafts follow. In Ricochets (2006), commissioned by Quasar and played by André Leroux on tenor saxophone, the sound bounces through real-time processing into the fixed sounds; the piece was prompted by a boy who drowned on a flooded bike trail near the composer's home. Misfit (2007), for Tim Brady's electric guitar, turns on schizophrenia, parasitic voices and obsessive rhythms. low memory #3 (2005) is built on the gestures and sounds of Lori Freedman's bass clarinet, about losing one's points of reference.
The earliest piece, low memory #1 (2000), was realized partly at the Métamorphoses d'Orphée studio in Ohain for 8 channels and dedicated to Gino Favotti; it includes sounds by the flutist Claire Marchand and the double bassist Joëlle Léandre. Sharon Kanach contributes the booklet essay.
Born in Caraquet, New Brunswick, in 1960, Monique Jean works across electroacoustic and mixed music, sound installations and improvisation. Since 2012 she has added analog and no-input elements to her set-up as sources of instability, leading to the Volt series.
