“Annette Vande Gorne has administered Schaeffer’s assets in magnificence, developing her own brilliance out of these tantalizing traditions.”

Exils gathers six works by Annette Vande Gorne, composed between 1983 and 2006 at her Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio in Ohain, each one read by the composer as a form of exile: a time of crisis, wandering, transformation or renewal. Several were conceived for 5.1 or eight channels, and the programme runs to over 83 minutes.
Ce qu’a vu le vent d’Est (d’après Debussy), dedicated to Hans Tutschku, is a threnody for the civilian victims of ideological and economic wars. It takes Claude Debussy as a model of energy and writing rather than a sound source, letting fragments of him show through a moving curtain; it won 2nd prize at the Pierre Schaeffer competition in Pescara in 2003. Vox Alia I: Affetti, commissioned by the GRM, is a suite of vocal studies in which voices from every continent are transformed beyond recognition, ending with a tribute built on the voice of Pierre Schaeffer.
Two pieces set texts of exile. In Fragments de lettre à un habitant du Centre, read by Éveline Legrand, the immigrant Arab poet Kamal Ben Hameda looks at Western urban life with anger and an open hand. Exil, chant II sets Saint-John Perse’s poem written in exile on a Maine island, read by Vande Gorne herself, in a 1983 piece revised in 2006. Folie de Vincent : Crise is incidental music made with an EMS VCS3 for Philippe Marannes’s play on Van Gogh, Sulphur Sun, and Figures d’espace, dedicated to Claude Lenners, is a study written for the performer at the mixing desk.
Born in Charleroi in 1946, Vande Gorne turned to acousmatics after hearing François Bayle and Pierre Henry, and studied with Guy Reibel and Schaeffer in Paris. She founded Musiques & Recherches and the festival L’Espace du son, and taught acousmatic composition in Liège, Brussels and Mons.

“Vande Gorne has an evident penchant for indefinite abstraction, a field where her studio mastery shines brightly, just check the gorgeous spectra of Figures d’espace.”
“Un DVD présenté comme un CD? Oui, tout à fait. Car le seul intérêt du format est qu’il permet à l’utilisateur de choisir entre deux types d’écoute.”
