Fulgurances collects six fixed-medium works by Vanessa Massera, composed between 2015 and 2018 at the University of Sheffield Sound Studios, at EMS in Stockholm and during residencies in Estonia and on Gotland. Places and the cultures attached to them drive her music, and each piece starts from a specific environment, a collaboration or a story.
Éclats de feux, the first piece she completed in the UK, takes its title from the bonfires and fireworks of November in England and won second prize at the Jeu de temps / Times Play competition in 2016. Omega 3 came out of a residency at MoKS in Mooste, Estonia, with the accordionist Tuulikki Bartosik, around an abandoned factory in the woods: industrial objects, surroundings, accordion and voice, with elements of Nordic folk music. At the Visby International Centre for Composers she made An Almost Abstract Experience for five channels, one of her rare works built almost entirely from studio recordings, and met the Stockholms Saxofonkvartett, whose improvisations became Exercitium arithmeticæ occultum nescientis se numerare animi, playable as an acousmatic piece or with the quartet live.
Border Crossing was written for a live-action role-play on the migrant crisis in Europe, commissioned by the Avalon larp studio, and stands for the blind passage from one country to the next without knowing the path or its length. Résistance is made from recordings of her grandmother Nives Massera recalling her youth in France, her meeting with Django Reinhardt and her part in the Resistance, with added accordion and synthesizer; it was premiered at the Euroradio Folk Festival in Moscow in 2018.
Born in Montréal in 1987, Vanessa Massera studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal from 2008 to 2012 and received a PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2019 with a thesis on environment in electroacoustic music.
