Six acousmatic works by Ambrose Seddon from 2005 to 2017, from games played with his young son at the EMS in Stockholm to Norfolk and Devon coastal recordings, including the Klang ! first prize winner Pellere.

Espaces Éphémères collects six works composed by Ambrose Seddon between 2005 and 2017, most of them made in his own studio and at the Electroacoustic Music Studios of City, University of London, where he studied with Denis Smalley. Two were conceived for four and eight channels and appear here in stereo. The cover reproduces an abstract oil painting by his mother, Veronica Seddon.

Traces of Play, dedicated to his parents and realized partly during a residency at the EMS in Stockholm, starts from the games he played with his young son, using toys and everyday objects and trying to adopt the child’s way of repeating, exploring and moving on. It won second prizes at Destellos in 2018 and at Klang ! in 2019. Pellere, whose title loosely means to propel forward, works with pulse and energetic spatial gesture, with violin by Peiman Khosravi and cello by Laura Reid; it took first prize at the first Klang ! competition in Montpellier in 2014.

The Nowness of Everything takes its title from a 1994 interview with the television dramatist Dennis Potter, given weeks before his death, and expands everyday sounds into new “present tenses”. 10_35_70 deals with age and the experience of time, its activity gradually slowing towards calm. Fleeting Strands draws on recordings from the coasts of Norfolk and Devon, including the sea, caves, boatyards and the bell-ringers of St Nectan’s Church in Welcombe. Fouram, the earliest piece, was awarded at Visiones Sonoras in Morelia in 2006.

Born in Hampton in 1971, Seddon studied at Goldsmiths College and released electronic music on independent labels before turning to electroacoustic composition, with an MA and a PhD at City, University of London. He lectures in the Creative Technology Department of Bournemouth University.

Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector

“In keeping with the overall title Espaces éphémères, Seddon seems to be acutely aware of the fleeting joys of life, which seem to pass by far too quickly for all of us; this is reflected in his work, along with a reminder to keep paying attention, and remember that life is not a rehearsal.”

Rigobert Dittmann, Bad Alchemy
