Vues Spectrales presents four works by Denis Smalley spanning three decades, from Vortex (1981-82) to Spectral Lands (2010-11). The three recent pieces were composed for six channels and are heard here in stereophonic Ambisonic recordings produced by Jonty Harrison in his Birmingham studio in April 2018.
Spectral Lands, commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and CeReNeM, draws on the voices, birdsong and natural phenomena of imagined lands and on what Smalley calls “spectral spatiality”. He was recalling a visit to Golden Bay in New Zealand, with the wind-swept sands and resonant caves of Wharariki beach, and the skies of the Corbières, where most of the piece was mixed, though he warns against hearing it as a literal landscape portrait. Ringing Down the Sun was made at DIEM in Aarhus, commissioned at the initiative of Wayne Siegel, after the Danish custom of tolling church bells at the end of the working day. Resounding, written for the opening of the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast, grows outward from its closing tolls into resonances heard from inside objects and from large spaces such as a church.
Vortex, commissioned by Tim Souster for a thirteen-concert tour of Electronic Music Now, was realized at the University of East Anglia with material from the SSSP system in Toronto and the Finnish Radio experimental studio. Its large resonant attacks act as the pillars of the form. It won a first prize ex æquo in the analogue category at Bourges in 1983, together with the special prize of the ICEM, and is now dedicated to the memory of Souster, who died in 1994.
Born in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1946, Denis Smalley studied in Paris in Olivier Messiaen’s class and on the Ina-GRM course, then at York. He built the first UK sound diffusion system at East Anglia from 1976, led the music department at City University in London, and developed the notion of spectromorphology, the shaping of sound spectra through time. His awards include the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica in 1988.
