Six acousmatic works by Elizabeth Anderson from 1994 to 2014, mostly octophonic, from the voices of eighteen languages recorded for the Nazi fortress of Mimoyecques to sonified solar winds and a tesseract taken from A Wrinkle in Time.

L’Envol brings together six acousmatic works by Elizabeth Anderson written over twenty years, from 1994 to 2014, most of them for eight channels and realized in Belgium, at the Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio of Musiques & Recherches in Ohain, at the Academy of Soignies, and at City University London. Space, from the scale of the cosmos to that of the cell, runs through all of them.

Mimoyecques (1994) was made for the 50th anniversary of the destruction of the underground fortress built in 1943 to house V-3 cannons aimed at London, where more than a thousand forced labourers from eighteen countries died. Recordings made in and around the site meet eighteen male voices in the workers’ languages, reading texts by writers including Danilo Dolci, Hans Christian Andersen and Czesław Miłosz. Les forges de l’invisible turns William Blake’s twin themes of destruction and creation into sound, the forge melting down in order to rebuild; it won 1st prize and the Public Prize at Métamorphoses 2004. Ether, dedicated to the victims of September 11, 2001, spreads energy outward from the centre of the space, using field recordings from the old city of Jerusalem and a cello. Solar Winds and … and Beyond translate electromagnetic and astronomical phenomena into an imaginary flight past the heliosphere; the diptych won 1st prize at Musica Nova 2015. Protopia / Tesseract draws on Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, its material spinning faster and faster to suggest space and time folding.

Born in Orange, New Jersey, in 1960, Anderson moved to Brussels in 1987 and studied electroacoustic composition with Annette Vande Gorne in Mons, then took a doctorate with Denis Smalley in London in 2011. She teaches at the Conservatoire royal de Mons.

“Even if listeners who are not so familiar with sound processing couldn’t catch the beauty of this release, L’Envol collects many works by Elizabeth, whose aesthetic research often features metacultural interconnection.”

Jukka Mikkola, Yle Radio 1

“Mitä on meidän mielikuvituksemme tuolla puolen…”

François Couture, Monsieur Délire

“[…] Anderson often uses emptiness as a ressource — sound spaces in which a potentiality is floating in the form of tiny threads of feedback.”
