Peter Lieberson, the son of Goddard Lieberson (the Columbia Records executive who did so much to document American music), studied with Milton Babbitt and later with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the Tibetan Buddhist teacher whose influence eventually redirected his compositional language toward a more lyrical, spiritually grounded idiom. This early CRI document captures Lieberson in his more complex, Babbitt-influenced phase. Erik Lundborg's contributions represent another strand of the American academic avant-garde of the period.
