The fourth instalment of the MMXX series comes from the dutch pianist Reinier Van Houdt, whose work pursues an escape from conventional notations of sound, timing, space, physicality, memory, noise, environment, and the points where interpretation, experience and improvisation touch.

In addition to a growing body of solo and collaborative compositions of his own, for more than 20 years Van Houdt has been a crucial voice in the landscape in contemporary avant-garde and experimental music, performing, recording, and helping to realise piano and ensemble works by Robert Ashley, Alvin Curran, Charlemagne Palestine, Giacinto Scelsi, Luc Ferrari, Alvin Lucier, Christian Marclay, Christian Wolff, and Tony Conrad, among many others, as well as playing in David Tibet's Current 93 for the better part of the last decade.

Entitled Les Champs Lissajous, Van Houdt’s effort for Matière Mémoire is a dark and tense work of electroacoustic composition, ranging from frenetic to minimalistic. Masterfully executed, long-tones, shifting ambiences, and fragments of field recording are intervened with by a vast range of approaches to the piano, evolving emotively as the piece progresses, before eventually giving way and becoming largely consumed to the expanse of brooding sound. Beautiful, challenging, and especially engaging through its combination material.



Matière Mémoire presents the MMXX Series. In anticipation of the year 2020, Matière Mémoire asked 20 great artists to create an original 20 minutes piece and an artwork. Throughout this year, each quarter will see the release of 5 new vinyls, available individually or as a bundle. Each record is limited at 500 copies and comes as a crystal clear vinyl featuring an original track of 20 minutes on one side, and a laser engraved artwork on the other. Each contained in a transparent sleeve printed with the MMXX logo, and each coming with a print of the artist artwork.
