Nordan is the first ECM album by the Swedish singer and fiddler Lena Willemark and the multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller. On it the two rework medieval Swedish ballads, hymns and fiddle tunes for a small band that mixes folk musicians with jazz players. The material is old, mostly traditional, while the sound is open, spacious and rooted in drones. It won a Swedish Grammis and set the pattern for the duo's later work on the label.
Willemark sings, plays fiddle and uses the old herding call, and Möller arranges and plays mandola, natural flutes, folk harp, shawm, cow horn, hammered dulcimer and accordion. Möller had come to Nordic folk music by way of jazz and Greek music, and with Willemark and the fiddler Per Gudmundson he also played in the trio Frifot. Most of the material is traditional, and Möller wrote Vallsvit and Drömspår and arranged the rest. Around the two are Palle Danielsson on double bass, Mats Edén on drone fiddle and kantele, Gudmundson on fiddle and Swedish bagpipes, and others on saxophones and percussion. Manfred Eicher produced the session at Rainbow Studio in Oslo in December 1993, with Jan Erik Kongshaug as engineer.
The sixteen tracks run from short calls and tunes to long ballads. The opening Trilo, barely over a minute long, is a call in Willemark's voice. Mannelig sets her singing over watery harp, one of several long narrative ballads on the disc. At the other end of the disc Möller has the last word with Drömspår, a short epilogue for accordion. In between, Willemark puts her voice aside for the fiddle on two polskas and other dance tunes.
SPIN wrote that Nordan "transforms nearly forgotten medieval balladry into glorious living tradition", and noted how Möller's arrangements keep the songs' spirit "while pushing them into jazzier territory". Tyran Grillo of ECM Reviews called it "an ECM benchmark" among the label's folk releases and praised its acoustics. The duo followed it in 1996 with Agram, and the project later grew into The Nordan Suite by Möller and Hans Ek, recorded with the Västerås Sinfonietta in 2013.
This is the CD edition, ECM 1536, first released in September 1994.
