This album features works by Toru Takemitsu, a world-renowned Japanese composer who transcended the boundaries of contemporary music and tackled a wide range of experimental compositions, from film scores to pop songs, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Seiji Ozawa and pianist Peter Serkin's group, Tashi. Side A, "Catrane," was composed with Tashi's performance and Ozawa's conducting in mind. Like the jacket artwork, the number four dominates the structure, with a theme of eight bars and four bars played by a quartet. The B-side, "A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden," was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and composed in 1977, inspired by the photographs of Marcel Duchamp. In addition to the Western orchestra, it also features a bass drum. Both sides are works that exude the unique beauty of Takemitsu.
