Gryphon's third album, from 1974: four long instrumental movements named after the moves of a chess game, joining crumhorn, bassoon and recorders to electric keyboards and rock drums. Toured in support of Yes.

Red Queen To Gryphon Three was recorded by Gryphon at Chipping Norton Recording Studio in Oxfordshire in August 1974 and released that December, the first of their albums to be issued in the United States. The band then spent the following months opening for Yes in America, Canada and Britain.

The record is entirely instrumental and divided into four movements, Opening Move, Second Spasm, Lament and Checkmate, each close to ten minutes, the titles following a game of chess. Richard Harvey plays keyboards, recorders and crumhorn, Brian Gulland bassoon and crumhorn, Graeme Taylor guitar, Dave Oberlé drums and percussion, with Philip Nestor on bass guitar and Pete Redding on acoustic bass. The early music timbres are still there, but used less than before, inside composed structures with shifting meters and themes passed between woodwind, guitar and keyboards.

Japanese CD reissue by Belle Antique, SHM-CD with 2025 remastering, in a mini LP replica with obi and Japanese insert.
