Unterhaltungen mit Larven und Überresten by Läuten der Seele (Christian Schoppik) unfolds as a haunting electroacoustic collage. Looping fragments from vintage “Heimatfilme,” field recordings, and diverse instruments evoke a surreal, dream-prone nostalgia. The album balances hypnotic repetition with spectral detail, drifting between tenderness and uncanny unease.

With Unterhaltungen mit Larven und Überresten, Läuten der Seele — the solo project of Christian Schoppik, half of experimental dark folk duo Brannten Schnüre — crafts a spectral tapestry where memory and reverie intermingle. Released on World of Echo, the album draws deeply from the well of German postwar Heimatfilme, sampling and manipulating their pastoral soundtracks until they become strange, half-remembered apparitions. Schoppik intertwines these clipped melodic fragments with field recordings and live instrumentation—accordion, guitar, flute, and the hum of everyday objects—creating vignettes that flicker between the rustic and the phantasmagoric.

Much like his acclaimed debut, Läuten der Seele, this record shapes nostalgia into something restless and ambiguous. The loops, at times adorned with folksy timbres and swirling string lines, never settle into passive sentimentality; instead, they probe the psychic residue of idealized, possibly illusory landscapes. The album’s narrative is episodic, each piece a half-conversation or spectral encounter with the past—fragments that occasionally resolve into fleeting moments of comfort before dissolving into the unresolved. Schoppik wields the techniques of musique concrète and sound collage with humility, allowing longing and disorientation to occupy the same space.

Between micro-melodies, blurred ambient textures, and the gentle disintegration of acoustic materials, Unterhaltungen mit Larven und Überresten opens a world that feels at once near and faded. The resonance of The Caretaker or William Basinski can be detected in the looping methodology, but Schoppik pursues a path marked by a uniquely German sense of melancholy, as well as a subtle sense of humor. His compositions shimmer with ghost-like detail, each layer flickering in and out of focus. In this collection, Schoppik neither clings to the utopias of memory nor yields to mired gloom; he traces the outlines of disappearance, granting attention to delicate transitions and moments of becoming. The result is a work that blurs the boundaries between dream and recollection—inviting listeners to inhabit a liminal, magical space where echoes outlast their sources and every resonance becomes a possible world.
