The Yellow Box marks the long-awaited collaborative release from Peter Gordon, the pioneering New York composer, saxophonist, and architect of the Love of Life Orchestra, and David Cunningham, the London-based composer, producer, and founder of The Flying Lizards. Two distinct musical sensibilities from opposite sides of the Atlantic converge to create a record that is at once experimental, playful, and deeply immersive.  

Recorded over various sessions that span both the immediacy of live improvisation and the meticulous sculpting of studio production, The Yellow Box unfolds as a dialogue between two singular artists. Gordon’s warm, pulse-driven minimalism and saxophone textures meet Cunningham’s radical approach to structure, sound manipulation, and unexpected juxtapositions. The result is a record that resists easy categorization: at times hypnotic, at times witty, always challenging and rewarding.  

“The title The Yellow Box evokes both mystery and simplicity — an object you can hold in your hands, but whose contents shift every time you open it,” says Gordon. “Our sessions were like that: playful exchanges that kept producing something new and surprising.” Cunningham adds: “For me, collaboration is about putting ideas into circulation, not fixing them into a single frame. With Peter, every sonic fragment became the start of a new conversation.” With its mix of instrumental explorations, electronic textures, and a shared spirit of curiosity,The Yellow Box reflects the restless creativity of two artists whose careers have consistently challenged conventions in contemporary music — from the downtown New York experimental scene to post-punk London.
