The four seasons in a mixed beech wood and the red deer rut in a mountain forest, recorded digitally by Walter Tilgner, mostly with a Neumann binaural dummy head, and assembled without further sound processing.

Waldkonzert (Sylvan Concert) follows a mixed beech wood through the seasons and ends in a mountain forest during the rut of the red deer stags. The record is put together from a large number of recordings, and according to the notes no further sound engineering was done on them. It is one of the first records in the Natural Sound series.

Walter Tilgner is a German nature sound recordist, well known as a photographer of woodland and forest scenes. For more than twenty years his main activity has been the documentary recording of natural sound, the making of what the label calls sound pictures. He is author and producer of more than ten Natural Sound CDs for Wergo. For this disc he chose a digital technique because traditional analogue recording, as still used by ornithologists, could not give the original sound quality he wanted. Most of the material was taken with a Neumann KU 81i binaural dummy-head microphone.

Winter comes first, in a section of almost eleven minutes. Spring is the longest part, over 26 minutes in three scenes: early spring, a woodland stream and full spring. Summer and the autumn rut follow. The label's list of sounds is concrete: robin and wren by the stream, the drumming of a great spotted woodpecker, a hare coming down the slope, rustling dry leaves. There is also the scolding alarm of a passing blackbird and the deep buzzing of hornets flying to their nest.

Nothing has been cleaned of the present. The notes admit that traffic noise can hardly be avoided in open country today, so it can be heard once in a while. Prof. Hannes Mayer of Vienna wrote that Tilgner's photographs capture "the very essence of the woods", and that the sound pictures carry this view further, above all its emotional side. Tilgner's own aim, as the label puts it, is to send the listener back into the woods with eyes and ears alert.

CD, Wergo SM 9001-50, in the Natural Sound series; Discogs dates this edition to 1985. Total time 57 minutes 39 seconds.
