** Edition of 300 ** Spanning twenty years, Bart De Paepe's journey through the psychedelic underground and countercultural scenes has weathered many reincarnations, only to solidify into one of the most distinctive voices operating at the intersection of improvisation and mysticism. His name is inextricably linked to key imprints such as Astres d’Or, Ultra Eczema, and No Basement Is Deep Enough, yet his identity is equally forged in the dynamic interplay of live and studio explorations alongside Sylvester Anfang’s funeral folks, Louise Landes Levi, Timo van Luijk, and Raymond Dijkstra. This wide-ranging network of collaboration and cross-pollination has equipped De Paepe with an ever-expanding palette of ideas and timbres.
Beyond music, his creative orbit extends to the visual realm, with his paintings and drawings coloring many releases on the labels he curates - notably Sloow Tapes and Sloowax - where he’s orchestrated a catalog teeming with music and poetry by like-spirited travelers. The creative curiosity fueling these ventures is the same energy animating Zürahümnah. Here, De Paepe distills two decades of restless exploration into a suite of four pieces that shimmer with the tension between solitude and connectivity, inner drift and wide-eyed alertness.
Equipped with Hawaiian guitar, piano, organ, and cymbal, De Paepe bypasses the obvious psychedelic tropes, instead bending sound into shapes that suggest fleeting twilight, borderless time, and spaces unmoored from linear narrative. The record pulses as a floating vibration - at once luminous and shadowed, familiar and uncanny. Moments echo the collaborative intensity forged with his peers, but everything is refracted through an unmistakably personal lens: Zürahümnah is a vessel for wandering through bright and obscure chambers of consciousness.
If the psychedelic underground is a web of hidden pathways and unexpected intersections, then De Paepe is a tireless guide - equally grounded in tradition and eager to traverse undiscovered terrain. With Zürahümnah, he draws listeners into a world where every resonant detail and flickering contour rewards deep immersion, testifying to his role as both chronicler and visionary within the ever-expanding cosmos of contemporary psychedelia.
