A Mountain Sees a Mountain, the new duo recording by Hamid Drake and Pat Thomas, captures two master improvisers engaged in an intimate yet expansive dialogue. Released in October 2025 via Old Heaven Books, the album bridges African rhythmic philosophy and European avant-piano traditions, achieving a deep equilibrium between motion, meditation, and melodic abstraction.

Hamid Drake and Pat Thomas—two luminaries of improvised music—join forces on A Mountain Sees a Mountain, a duo album that transcends stylistic borders to explore rhythm, space, and spirit with transcendent focus. Issued by Old Heaven Books on October 20, 2025, the record unfolds as a conversation between two seasoned artists whose vocabularies defy linear definition. Drake’s percussive language, grounded in African diasporic pulse and meditative energy, meets Thomas’s elastic pianism—at once lyrical, percussive, and unpredictably abstract. Together, they create a music of patience and revelation.

Recorded live in Guangzhou during an extended residency curated by the Chinese label’s experimental division, the set channels the duo’s shared faith in spontaneous composition as collective listening. Across the album, which includes movements such as “The Spider’s Web” and “Cloud Mirror,” gestures are neither imposed nor ornamental but discovered in real time. Thomas’s clusters and preparations weave through hypnotic rhythmic cycles and moments of near silence, while Drake’s drumming moves fluidly from deep-toned frame-drum mantras to shimmering cymbal textures and resonant tabla-like dialogue. The result evokes a timeless landscape: equal parts ritual, study, and meditation.

What distinguishes A Mountain Sees a Mountain is the graceful interplay of restraint and exuberance. Episodes of smoky lyricism bloom within passages of granular detail, as if both musicians are tracing the contours of sound’s inner geography. Drake’s chant-like vocal resonances are met with Thomas’s fractured harmonic fragments, their convergence evoking the spiritual minimalism of Don Cherry and the fearless harmonic invention of Cecil Taylor—yet stripped of imitation, rendered anew through humility and trust.
