It’s almost here! Genius UK improviser Pat Thomas is about to debut his first-ever 577 Records solo album – and abstract hip hop has never sounded so good! The much-anticipated ten-track This is Trick Step flawlessly showcases the artist’s distinguished approach to modern music. It immerses us in an almost 3D listening experience that creatively melds texture, depth, and mental stimulation.
“Imagine an Alternative Universe where JDilla and Morton Feldman collaborate: this is the result,” Pat says about This is Trick Step. The award-winning musician and composer has been weaving melodies since age eight. In his early days, he focused on classical music and reggae but later became known for his experimental creativity. Wire Magazine described him as “one of the most imaginative and idiosyncratic pianists at work today”. His avant hip hop offers a whole other expression of his undeniable gifts. Thomas has a tight relationship with the folks at 577 Records. As one of their main collaborators since its beginnings, he’s released many popular albums with the label, including one earlier this year (BleySchool: Where?). He also mentored their 2023 SOF music residencies in Tangier, Morocco.
Don’t miss Pat’s new experimental hip hop album This is Trick Step, which drops at 577 Records on October 18, 2024.
