Before Virgin made them famous, Tangerine Dream spent their first years on Ohr, recording the long, formless organ-and-effects pieces that Alpha Centauri (1971) and Atem (1973) collect. This double pairs the two, and they show the band before the sequencer: Edgar Froese and company building weather systems from organ, flute, and tape, nearer to musique concrète than to the pulsing machine music ahead. Atem in particular caught the ear of John Peel, whose championing helped pull the group toward a British audience and the Virgin contract that changed everything.
The prehistory for anyone who knows them only from the sequencer years.
