Phaedra is the hinge. Recorded in 1974 at the Manor for Virgin, it caught Tangerine Dream at the instant they bolted the Moog sequencer to the Mellotron and found the sound that would define a decade of electronic music. The title piece owes part of its shape to a sequencer drifting out of tune as the tape ran, an accident the trio kept because it bettered anything they had planned.

Improbably, the album reached the British top twenty: an instrumental German record of dark synthetic tides, sold to teenagers who had never heard of Stockhausen. The Berlin School begins in earnest here.
