By the early eighties Steve Lacy had spent a decade in Paris building a band that could handle his particular obsessions - Monk, Zen, Buckminster Fuller, the exact interval between speech and melody - and Blinks catches it live and unedited across two LPs. Steve Potts's alto is the perfect foil, spiky where Lacy is dry; Bobby Few plays piano like a man simultaneously in church and in a bar fight; Irene Aebi sings and plays violin; Jean-Jacques Avenel and Oliver Johnson keep it moving. Compositions built from tiny cells, played with total precision, and no interest whatsoever in the American jazz market.
