Five acousmatic works by Patrick Ascione from 1998 to 2012, commissioned by the IMEB in Bourges and Ina-GRM, from the 8-channel spatial polyphony of Danse de l’aube to the last of his Ascioneries, issued seven years after his death.

Figures de Son presents five fixed-medium works by Patrick Ascione composed between 1998 and 2012, all commissioned by the IMEB in Bourges, Ina-GRM or the French State. Published in 2021, seven years after the composer’s death, it opens with his own statement that sound today is to music what colour has always been to painting.

Two pieces were written for eight real tracks, part of the “spatial polyphony” Ascione developed from the late 1980s, building the spatial dimension of a work into the studio composition itself. Danse de l’aube (2000-02), commissioned by the French State and Ina-GRM and premiered at the Maison de Radio France, tests rhythm and its taboos in acousmatic music and explores sonic relief. Enième (2004), made at the IMEB, is about the bet involved in starting any new piece: giving life and meaning to sounds collected and left waiting, without context or history.

Ascionerie no 6: Fantaisie diabolique, commissioned by Ina-GRM in 2011-12 and voiced by the composer, closes the series Figures de style begun in 2003. He coined the word for his own habits and mannerisms in the studio, and here sets artistic research against the market, played by the devil. Divertissement (2001) is an attempt to make the genre livelier and more accessible, while Et puis l’oubli… (1998), a mention at Bourges that year, is a tribute to remembrance at the moment when the present turns into the past.

Born in Paris in 1953, Patrick Ascione trained at the GMEB in Bourges in 1977-79 and took the first computer music session at Ircam. He worked at the GMEB until 1984 and later taught electroacoustic music in Cherbourg and La Rochelle. His Espaces-paradoxes (1987-89) was the first piece in 16 real tracks. He died in Calvados in 2014.

Figures de son is a way to approach the history of an artist who has written important pages of the genre, but also to discover gems until recently unpublished.Read more

Patrick Ascione was a French composer who studied at the Groupe de musique expérimentale de Bourges (GMEB) in the 1970s and later was drawn into the study of computer music at Ircam. He may have done some work as a facilitating technician in the GMEB institution and also taught electroacoustic music in Cherbourg. Interestingly, he’s another composer who saw the potential of electroacoustic music to realise the idea of “colour”, and in the 1970s thought of his own work as a form of sound painting, even including colours as part of his titles, for instance his “yellow lemon” [Métamorphose d’un jaune citron] piece which surfaced on [the Cinéma pour l’oreille label produced by] Metamkine in 1995.

The pieces here on Figures de son are not the colour pieces, but a lively survey of his works from around 1998 to 2012. A good introduction — I never heard his work before, but there’s a lot of drama and excitement. I’m personally drawn to his Ascionerie no 6: Fantaisie diabolique from 2011-12, which I’m content to interpret as a typically Gallic vision of Hell populated with lively horned devils and grinning skeletons, much like those French postcards you used to get in the 19th century. Ascione conjures up a babble of treated voices cackling and jabbering in a swirling mess of tape noise, along with a lumbering disco beat — what’s not to like? It seems the composer was trying to make some point about market forces and capitalism, but I prefer my version with skulls and red capes.

Remainder of the disc is strong too, with the fast-moving chattering and timbral changes of Divertissement, and the crazy apocalyptic synth-swipes of Et puis l’oubli…, which is intended as a metaphor for the “end of all things”. I’m finding plenty of musical drama and content in the music of Patrick Ascione, even if it might stand guilty of a certain over-emphasis and swagger, like an actor strutting on the stage with many hand-gestures, exaggerated posture, and facial contortions. Which might not be wide of the mark, if we translate the French “figures” as “faces”. I’ve tried reading his explanatory notes in the package, but his artistic intentions and ideas, as expressed in words, are more or less incomprehensible to me; far better in this case just to listen to the music.

Patrick Ascione (1953-2014) is getting his new posthumous release.

A true master of electroacoustic musique concrète is unfolding truly refreshing and unusually adventureous narrative on display.

His idea of spatial polyphony as he used to call it gives you an insight into what it was to mould and blend so many counterpoints into a densely punctured storyline of his works — an interesting set of pieces with its own rhythm and reason.

A narrative is something that is overused, abused and de-constructed in a masterful way — be it processed concrete sounds or voiceover — it will always be a point of positive friction with how you can cope it as a listener and how it leaves an impression on you.

Ascione experimented with beatmaking and plunderphony in his own way. It’s a good way to remember him trying to dwelve on this goldmine of ideas and aspects and details and vibes…
