7" EP + 98-page softbound numbered book (this is nr. 469).
Magnetic Tape Piece for environmental sounds collected from five chance determined places in Hanau. This work was realized in March 1992 by Sterneck/KomistA, with the record (a 45rpm) and brochure (entitled "Silence, Consciousness and Change") published in the same year, just after Cage's death, by the Komista-Collective. In December of 1986, a house in the Metzgerstrasse in Hanau, Germany, was taken over by squatters, growing quickly into an autonomous cultural center. Cage composed this work at the request of the community, using a map of the city of Hanau, dividing it into 88 x 126 squares of 1/8 x 1/8 inch each. Using IC (Cage's primary I Ching computer software program), five locations on the map were determined. The directions in the score are simple: "Make a recording at each location shown on the map. Start at the times on the days indicated…”.
An artist's object rather than a conventional release. Part of the conceptual publishing tradition that Cage's work regularly inspired, in which the boundaries between score, recording, book, and artwork are deliberately blurred. Rare in any condition.
