The new transmission from Turin's My Cat Is An Alien, Maurizio and Roberto Opalio's long-running cosmic project, issued in a hand-numbered limited edition of 99 copies on their own Opax Records imprint. Two long-form pieces built around what the Opalios describe as a genuine creative breakthrough: applying their established practice of spontaneous composition in reverse, working by subtraction once the "apogee of real-time creation" had been reached, in service of an idea of infinity passing through the work.
Familiar MCIAA ingredients remain at play, Maurizio's self-made double-bodied string instrument, Roberto's wordless vocalizations and "alientronics", but combined and stripped down in ways that genuinely suggest a new phase of "alien minimalism". A murmuring backwards pulse, a sliding tone leaving smeared after-images, occasional incursions of detuned strings and hazy vocal drones, the unexpected mid-piece arrival of an insistent alarm beep that darkens the entire frame: at once minimal and hallucinatory, the music flickers and loops in trance-inducing ways while morphing imperceptibly. One of the more singular records the duo have made.
Long admired well beyond the experimental underground, MCIAA have collaborated over the years with Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke, Christian Marclay, Keiji Haino, Christina Carter, Loren Connors, Mats Gustafsson and Jackie-O-Motherfucker among many others.
