The producer of Sunn O))) and co-composer of the Mandy score makes his own 'science fiction music' from a Philip K. Dick lecture, with Jim Jarmusch, Cyro Baptista and Charmaine Lee.

For thirty years Randall Dunn has been the person others call: from the Seattle scene of the 1990s he went on to shape records by Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room, Marissa Nadler and Thurston Moore, and to co-compose the score of Panos Cosmatos's Mandy with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson. This record is his own, and its title comes from Philip K. Dick's 1977 lecture in Metz, where the writer spoke of 'a manifold of partially actualized realities' lying next to the one we agree to call real.

Dunn takes the idea as a compositional method: each piece is one possible version among many, and phrases, motifs and sounds recur across the four tracks like fragments leaking in from other timelines, never quoted exactly. What leaks in is his own past, echoes of jazz and strings, of gigs and sessions, run through loopers and processing until they become something else. Side A opens with the twelve minutes of 'The Ultimate and Universal Ash', with Theo Espy on violin, Henry Fraser on bass and Izaak Mills on flutes over Korg MonoPoly, MS-20 and Moog Taurus.

Jim Jarmusch reads Philip K. Dick on 'We Larger Ones We None of Us', Laima Leyton reads Robert Graves on 'Divine Invasion', and the closing 'Ayn' brings in the largest group: Cyro Baptista on percussion and berimbau, Briggan Krauss on alto sax, Ben Greenberg on guitar, the voices of Charmaine Lee and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe over PPG Wave, Juno-60 and CS-80. 'This is my version of science fiction music', Dunn writes. Released by Kou Records.
