Outside Italy, Roberto Musci's name circulated for decades among a small number of collectors and almost no one else. That changed in 2016, when Music From Memory issued Tower Of Silence, a double LP gathering three decades of his work: hunting horns, gongs and strings brought back from India, Asia and Africa, hand drums, tape treatments, voices in a dozen tongues. Reviewers reached for Jon Hassell and the fourth world, and a new audience found him. In 2017 Soave reissued the albums themselves. The two gathered here are the 1984 debut, where the field recordings of a decade on the road were first threaded into music, and the 1988 duo LP with Giovanni Venosta, where that method took its most refined form.

The Loa Of Music, recorded after a decade traveling the world - drifting between Africa, India, and the Near and Far East - studying music, making field recordings, and collecting instruments, is a perfect culmination of such an experience, and a lens into the rigorously democratic and international spirit of the generation of artists to which Musci belongs. A work of field recording, musique concrète, electronics, synthesis, and instrumentation, pulling from countless musics from across the globe - an egoless gesture which, rather than attempting to find consensus, offers every voice equity and cohabitation. Originally intended to be a double album but eventually scaled back to a single disc, this edition includes the complete recording session from the original tapes, spread across two LPs.

Urban And Tribal Portraits, the second of Musci and Venosta's collaborative duo LPs, originally issued by ReR in 1988, takes the pair's investigation, reference, and incorporation of diverse, global traditions of music to new heights. Where The Loa Of Music was largely created from fragments of field recordings threaded with Musci's own interventions, this album creates a new synthesis - a hybridic, global music, standing outside of culture and geography. Created on a vast range of instruments - from the human voice and a Jew's harp, to perfectly placed guitar arpeggios, to a myriad of synthesizers and tape experiments - it is one of the great unheralded works from the end of the 1980s, out of print for decades and, when not commanding staggering prices on the collector's market, virtually unobtainable.

Two of the most important records to emerge from Italy in the last 50 years, back together and surely not to be around for long.
