A landmark Wergo "Studio Reihe Neuer Musik" release devoted to Christian Wolff (b. 1934), the youngest member of the John Cage circle and the one who pushed indeterminacy furthest into social-cooperative territory. Recorded August 1971 at Dartmouth College, where Wolff taught for decades; engineered by David Behrman and Gordon Mumma.
Side A: For Piano I (1952), the first piece Wolff wrote for David Tudor, sixteen segments built from a vocabulary of nine pitches, thirteen durations, nine amplitudes, with sequence determined by chance. For Pianist (1959), played by Frederic Rzewski, extends Wolff's chance procedures into a more open structure. Side B: Burdocks (1971), the long ensemble piece in ten parts, recorded here with selections (II "chords," V "wheels," VI "melody and accompaniment," VIII "100 bits," IX "quicksand") performed by Tudor, Rzewski, Wolff (bass guitar, flute), Mumma (horn, harmonica), Behrman (viola, melodeon, whistles) and John Nash (violin). Liner notes by Wolff. Sleeve design by Günther Stiller. CD reissue 2012 (WER 6777 2).
