Atlantic's posthumous gathering of material from the great 1959-61 sessions - the era of Giant Steps, My Favorite Things and Olé, which means the vault scraps here are other people's career highlights. John Coltrane in his harmonic-laboratory period, running changes with that famous relentlessness, plus glimpses of the modal turn already underway. Posthumous compilations get a bad reputation, often deserved; this one earns its shelf space because the source sessions were simply that rich - the man barely recorded a throwaway minute in those years. A rewarding stop for anyone deep in the Atlantic period. Japanese pressing, nicely done.
