Corbett vs. Dempsey is pleased to present The Early Quintet, featuring trumpeter Manfred Schoof's highly influential mid-sixties sextet (and occasional septet), featuring pianist Alexander Schlippenbach, tenor saxophonist Gerd Dudek, bassist Buschi Niebergall, and drummer Jaki Liebezeit. (One track adds drummer Sven-Åke Johansson.) In addition to the first CD release of the 1978 FMP record, this version includes a bonus piece, never before heard. Deep cuts from the formative moment of European free jazz.

Manfred Schoof, trumpet; Gerd Dudek, tenor saxophone; Alex Schlippenbach, piano; Buschi Niebergall, bass; Jaki Liebezeit, drums; Sven-Åke Johansson, drums (tracks 5-6).

First released as The Early Quintet (FMP 0540, 1978). Tracks 1-4 recorded by Willi Schmidt, December 1966, Munich. Tracks 5-6 recorded by Justus Liebig, September 1967, Godorf. “Voices” was recorded at the Radio Bremen Free Jazz Session, September 1967.
