Eric Dolphy

Country: United States

Eric Dolphy (1928-1964) was an American multi-instrumentalist and composer, born in Los Angeles, who played alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute. Working between post-bop, third stream and free jazz, he played with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane and led a handful of records in the early 1960s before his death in Berlin at 36. He came to wider notice in Chico Hamilton's quintet in 1958, then worked with Charles Mingus from 1960, joined John Coltrane's group in 1961 (including the Village Vanguard dates and Africa/Brass) and co-led a quintet with Booker Little at the Five Spot.
