Launching into the new year with some serious heat, Shame File Music returns to their longstanding explorations of experimental music from Australia and beyond, with “Vestigial Gamelan”, the third in Ian Andrews’ Astasie-abasie project’s “Gamelan” series, and “Blue Plum Bloom”, the debut full-length from the all-star trio David Brown, Tony Buck, and Magda Mayas. Each plumbing the radical possibilities of small and discreet sounds in remarkably singular ways, each of these startling creative stat…
During hot and mid pandemic August 2021, duo of Daniel Jakeš and Michael Nechvátal, know under their stage moniker of Jasnovidec, went to Pardubice for artist residency at notorious location of Divadlo 29 (Theater 29), key Czech location for worldwide avant garde experimental music and theater. During four long days and nights, the duo went onto several intense recording sessions, on which both Jakeš and Nechvátal played solely just their modular synths setups. On a few of the occasions they wer…
I have two stories behind this beast of a record. The first one is of course the oldest type of story around, the stranger comes to town. The stranger in this story is Zach Rowden. He shows up in Bucharest, once or twice, with his band (or duo if you want) Tongue Depressor. On one of the occasions he meets one of the locals involved in Bucharest avantgard circuits, Laurenţiu Coţac. And they decide to play together. They jam their double and electric basses. And it gets recorded. 23 minutes long …
In London I found a perfume that smelled like a brownie made entirely out of wet soil. It was inedible, but still very “cake”. “It’s our signature scent”, said the shopkeeper. But I used to make that cake as a child, with my child hands. I looked at the square bottle and it was me. Chocolate-like, but of the earth. Under our balcony I used to make garden stew in a clay pot with mud and pebbles. I stepped frantically on puffball mushrooms under a tree to make the steam. It didn't matter that the …
DNS - taking big bites of the khandas three cafes deep is a live recording of improvisatory miniatures that mimic the form of collage. It is the first collaborative effort of Joseph Schlam and Alexander Cooper, made in the attic of a childhood home, and launches the label’s efforts. Drawing from the duo’s shared upbringing in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, the duo convened over the course of a week, the results of which prompted the creation of BLTC.
Live improvisation amplified in stereo via…
*2025 stock* "Bong Watt is the sound for Oscar Reutersvärd’s drawings. Impossible shapes bent within the conscious as sonic earwigs burrow holes in the frontal lobe. Trying to think about “If It Works, It’s Obsolete” is beyond true abilities. There is no beginning, no destination to get to, only a micro-dose of sound chaos that becomes more familiar with each listen. With many listens in the tank, Walter Wright and Al Margolis (Elka Bong) with Mike Watt create the most subtly gentle entropy.
The…
*2025 stock* "Behind the acronym KBD, we find Michael Kimaid (drums and percussion), Gabriel Beam (modular synthesiser and live sampling) and Ryan Dohm (trumpet, sampler, and tapes). This is their third cassette for Eh? Records and the first one I hear. They recorded both sides in concert, the first at The Noisy Attic, Toledo, Ohio, on 27 December 2023 and the second at The Lightbox: Kalamazoo, Michigan, on 5 October 2023. From the information I understand, they play long-form improvisational so…
*2025 stock* "Ricardo Arias & Violeta Garcia Anagazas, Estatagemas, Jugarreta Y Tretas eh? MC Amazing duo set, recorded in Bogota, Colombia, in March 2020. Garcia plays cello and Arias plays bass balloon. Garcia’s cello playing has plenty of freak register exploration going on, and it’s almost shocking how much sound Arias is able to get from his inflated bladder. You’d think it could be a sort of gimmicky thing to do, but there’s some real majesty going on here. Sounds totally great and it’s a …
"Pressure relief..... these are the sounds to listen with caution. dustsceawung is a well used pot on the stove with a locking lid. The broken gauge configured with a crack that looks suspiciously like a smile. A worn rubber gasket creating a seal far past it's expected life by the manufacturer. Still this is not enough. There is no measure to how much force lies within. A hiss escapes, a rattle or knocking comes and goes. The process continues with thoughts of the contents within. In this case …
"Water ripples in outward patterns with the slightest disturbance. Peaceful space is found within the live performance of Stephen Flinn & Bryan Eubanks, and like glassy surfaced bodies of water, their sonic energy sends waves through the conscious. The balance rests on patience and understanding. Their instruments easily have the ability to crash the tranquil spirit, but their wisdom of how these sounds are unleashed is true testament to their alluring symphony. Stephen Flinn is the force behind…
"Public Eyesore has been releasing improvised and experimental music for over two decades and it never ceases to amaze me how interesting line ups Bryan who leads the label is coming up with. White Wuff is by any means no exception. When I read the liner notes I knew it is going to be a great musical adventure. Beautifully designed and released as a cd with 12 tracks that comprise different moods, travelling through genres. It's a pretty eclectic hybrid of various bits put into one mammoth of an…
"[...]Since each of the 19 pieces is a duo, Tungu gives his guests a chance to stretch out, often quietly, the combination often restrained yet mysterious. Starting out with experimental vocalist Sainko Namchylak, we hear her whispered voice surrounded by eerie electronics, subtle yet effective. It sounds like Tungu had each musician send him a short solo piece which he added to with acoustic bass, samples, field recordings or voice. Tungu obviously listened closely to add sounds which enhance w…

Rare original issue. Recorded by the husband and wife duo of Kurt Schwertsik and Christa Schrwertsik, “Manchmal Vertrödelt Christa S. Den Tag” is a dreamy gestalt, an album that borders Chanson, spoken-word, Ubu-esque passages, chanting and singing, against a variety of textures and jazz noir. Kurt Schwertsik (b. 1935) is an Austrian experimental/avant-garde composer. His music is mercurial and idiosyncratic with a refreshing lightness of touch. Though a pupil of Karlheinz Stockhausen, the compo…

*2025 stock* Amber is the first release of Jonah Segers. He presents four tracks of which three will take you on a journey through his routines of experimenting with different recording techniques and sound design. The first three tracks are telling each their own story, capturing the realness of daily life sounds which Jonah processes in a world of high contrast and tension. The last track shows a different side of his work, that brings you in a state of high alertness.
In the space of a couple of years, Stephen Grew has recorded three absolutely sparkling solo piano releases for Discus Music. All three are spontaneous improvisations arising from years of practice and refinement. Grew is a massively undervalued artist - follow the story he tells across this release and its two predecessors and I'm sure you'll agree.
Stephen Grew writes: "Recorded in the Great Hall, Lancaster University, on the 22nd November 2024. This music was recorded on a Steinway D and what…
Weaving a singular brand of DIY Minimalism, intertwining elements of folk, musique concrète, ambient, and electroacoustic music, Brannten Schnüre return to center stage with a due repress of what is widely regarded as their most impressive full-length release, “Muschelsammlung”, originally released in 2017 on Dutch label Vrystaete in a micro-edition of 150 copies. Laying the groundwork for the singular sonic landscapes that we've all come to adore, it's an absolutely stunning and engrossing piec…
Strong wind blows tumbleweed on unpaved streets of undisclosed desert settlement, dust and sand is in the air. Rusty shop sign of a small gas station dances and creaks in the hinges of its post. In the small bar, which serves as the only social establishment of this settlement, few habitues observe flickering unidentified object unsuccessfully trying to land on empty parking lot. Few of the habitues raise their beer bottles and cheer at the landing attempt, some of them are visibly excited about…
