Portrait CD of the Iranian composer Elnaz Seyedi: five works for duo, trio and ensemble, played by the Zöllner-Roche Duo, Alice Belugou and David Eggert, Trio Aventure, Ensemble Musikfabrik and the Kommas Ensemble, plus two online videos.

A Sun of One's Own is the portrait CD of the Iranian composer Elnaz Seyedi, whose music asks the listener to discover layered, subtle sounds, often at the edge of perception. Five works on the disc, from duo to ensemble, are joined by two video works available online. Opposites are present at the same time throughout.

The clarinettist Heather Roche and the accordionist Eva Zöllner play as the Zöllner-Roche Duo. The harpist Alice Belugou and the cellist David Eggert form a duo, and Trio Aventure plays a trio for clarinet, horn and cello. Ensemble Musikfabrik is conducted by Gregor A. Mayrhofer, and the Kommas Ensemble by Lautaro Mura Fuentealba. The booklet text is by Dirk Wieschollek, who points to the widely separated registers of the instruments and the tension between fragment and continuum, development and stasis.

Poetry is often the intellectual ground of her works. Nach neuen Meeren, for clarinet and accordion, was written for the Zöllner-Roche Duo and is based on Friedrich Nietzsche's poem of the same name. Edvard Munch's painting The Sun inspired the title work, a sun of one's own, for bass clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The Kommas Ensemble renders its finest colour gradations and an almost imperceptible brightening. In fragments inside, for flute, clarinet, horn, piano, viola and double bass, Musikfabrik also plays four Canons, special instruments built by the microtonal pioneer Harry Partch.

Seyedi also experiments with unusual sound sources beyond traditional instruments. In the music-theatre work PS - nach Spuren, made with the composer Ehsan Khatibi, spatulas of different sizes and pitches become instruments. It is part of the portrait as an online video of almost fifty minutes, alongside a very close look from far away. On the CD, Sense of a possibility for harp and cello and absolute snow complete the programme.
