December 1965, a Stockholm club, and a trio that had no business working as well as it did. Ornette Coleman brought David Izenzon and Charles Moffett to the Gyllene Cirkeln and played with no chordal instrument, no safety net and no interest in resolution. Izenzon is the revelation here: an arco bassist with a classical technique who uses it to make sounds nobody had asked a bass to make, sawing and singing underneath Coleman's alto while Moffett keeps the pulse elastic. Coleman also picks up trumpet and violin, both of which he plays badly and brilliantly. Recorded at close range by Blue Note, so you can hear the room and the audience.

Japanese Blue Note pressing, superb surfaces. The best live document of Coleman's mid-sixties trio, and one of the few Blue Notes that sounds like it was made in a bar.
