December 1958 at the Club Saint-Germain, from the same legendary Paris residency that produced some of the best-loved live hard bop ever taped. Art Blakey driving Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt through extended, fiery versions of the band's book - the club setting loosens everyone up, and the solos stretch well past studio length with no loss of focus. Morgan in particular sounds untouchable here: cocky, lyrical, endlessly inventive, all at twenty years old. The French knew exactly what they had in their basement that winter. Japanese RCA mono pressing of a classic European live document - clean copies of these are always worth grabbing.
