Seven fixed-medium works by the American composer Elainie Lillios from 1998 to 2007, made in Birmingham, Bowling Green, Toronto and Baton Rouge, from an interview with a Texan tarot reader to an ambisonic study shaped by Deep Listening.

Entre Espaces gathers seven works that Elainie Lillios composed between 1998 and 2007, in the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham, in her studio in Bowling Green, Ohio, at New Adventures in Sound Art in Toronto and at Louisiana State University. Her sources range from the clearly referential (voices, cars, water) to sounds that are harder to place, and the pieces move between narrative and pure texture.

Arturo (1998) is built from an interview with a tarot card reader in Denton, Texas, who asks visitors to let him answer their questions before they ask them. It won 1st prize in the ASCAP / SEAMUS Student Commission Competition in 2000 and a mention at Bourges in 1999. Threads (1998) and Stumbling Dance (1998-99), the latter an honourable mention in São Paulo, also date from the Birmingham years, when she worked with Jonty Harrison.

Dreams in the Desert (2001), made with Deep Listening guidance from Pauline Oliveros, follows the reveries of a traveller in a desert caravan. Backroads (2002), commissioned by Réseaux in Montréal, tells the tale of three country roads and of travel as adventure rather than routine. Hastening Toward the Half Moon (2004), an 8-channel commission from New Adventures in Sound Art, premiered on Toronto Island. Listening Beyond… (2007), commissioned by the Center for Computation & Technology at Louisiana State University, brings together her interests in Deep Listening, Ambisonics and the meeting of sound and silence in space.

Born in Chicago in 1968, Lillios writes electroacoustic works, pieces for instruments with live electronics and immersive installations. Her research covers sound diffusion as performance practice, Ambisonic spatialization and critical listening.

Dreams in the Desert was realized in 2001 at the Bowling Green State University Electroacoustic Studios and in the composer’s home studio in…

“It is a journey not to be missed.”

Josh Landry, Musique Machine

“… you can’t do much better than this. There is a world of textural oddness to explore.”

Nick Storring, Exclaim!

“Although the music of Elainie Lillios is firmly rooted in the new stream of musique concrète-derived aesthetics, her work offers much for fans of other forms of abstract electronica to sink their teeth into.”
