Milford Graves and Sunny Morgan made Percussion Ensemble for ESP in 1965 by simply removing everything a rhythm section is normally there to support, leaving a dense, breathing, non-metrical conversation between two kits. Graves would spend the following fifty years as a martial artist, herbalist and researcher into cardiac rhythm, and every one of those preoccupations is audible here in embryo. Percussion treated as a language rather than a function.
