1965, and a drummer decides that the entire apparatus of timekeeping is optional. Milford Graves recorded Percussion Ensemble for ESP with Sunny Morgan, two drum kits and nothing else: no horns, no bass, no pulse in any sense a listener of the period would have recognised. What replaces it is a kind of conversational, respiratory rhythm drawn from Indian tabla practice, African drumming and Graves' own study of the human heartbeat, which he pursued for the rest of his life with genuine scientific rigour. Almost nobody had made a record like this before. Very few have managed it since.

Original ESP-Disk' pressing. Foundational, uncompromising, and one of the strangest objects in a catalogue full of them.
