Chick Corea's first solo piano album, improvised at the Arne Bendiksen Studio in Oslo on 21 and 22 April 1971, produced by Manfred Eicher and first released by ECM in 1971. Luminessence LP reissue in gatefold sleeve.

Piano Improvisations Vol. 1 was Chick Corea's first solo piano album and one of the records that opened ECM's long documentation of solo piano in the early 1970s. Recorded in Oslo in April 1971 and released that summer, it caught Corea shaping complete pieces in real time, with no market for solo jazz piano yet in sight. It has long been counted among the classics of the catalogue.

Producer Manfred Eicher had offered the idea of a solo session to Corea, Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley, and Corea was the first to accept. He came to the Arne Bendiksen Studio on 21 and 22 April 1971, about a month after the last recordings of his group Circle. Jan Erik Kongshaug engineered. The two days produced enough music for two albums, the second issued as Piano Improvisations Vol. 2. Corea later recalled that he "took the next idea that came to mind and played it down", giving the pieces their titles afterwards.

The first side gathers five songs. Noon Song opens on a lyrical right-hand line and turns rhythmically lively about two minutes in. Song for Sally arrives fully formed, and Gary Burton later recorded it as Sea Journey. Sometime Ago, the longest track, has a Latin lilt and a melody that Corea would bring a year later to the first Return to Forever album. The second side is the suite Where Are You Now?, eight short pictures that move from darting treble figures and quiet prepared-piano sounds to solemn closing chords.

Writing in UK Jazz News about this reissue, Phil Johnson called it "a foundational text for contemporary solo jazz piano" that "still sounds marvellously ahead of the game". He heard pure melodic lyricism next to abstract passages in an almost Viennese atonal mode. In The Arts Fuse (2025) Michael Ullman wrote that "throughout these performances, Corea exudes confidence". The sessions came just before Corea's turn to the melodic, Latin-tinged music of Return to Forever and his duets with Burton on Crystal Silence.

LP in ECM's Luminessence series, launched in 2023 for audiophile vinyl editions of titles from the label's catalogue. ECM 1014, first released in 1971, in a gatefold sleeve with a note by Corea and an essay by Neil Tesser.
