Morton Feldman wrote Rothko Chapel in 1971 for the Houston chapel built around fourteen dark canvases by Mark Rothko. A wordless chorus moves against viola, percussion and celesta in slow, almost static blocks, until the viola takes up a melody Feldman had written at fifteen, the most openly lyrical moment in all his music.
For Frank O'Hara, from 1973, remembers the poet, killed on Fire Island in 1966, and is played by the Buffalo ensemble where Feldman was teaching, conducted by Jan Williams, with Julius Eastman at the piano. First recordings of both pieces, issued in 1976 with liner notes by the composer.
