Pierre Boulez wrote his three piano sonatas over a decade: the First in 1946, the vast and violent Second in 1947 and 1948, where he set out to break apart the classical sonata from within, and the Third between 1955 and 1957, a mobile form inspired by Mallarmé in which the performer chooses the route through the material.
Herbert Henck recorded all three at Radio Bremen in November and December 1984, playing the two published formants of the Third, Trope and Constellation-Miroir. Released by Wergo in 1985, in a gatefold with an Yves Klein painting on the cover.
