Aurèle Nicolet, the Swiss flautist who championed new music through the 1960s, plays five postwar works. Pierre Boulez's Sonatine and Jürg Wyttenbach's Paraphrase are for flute and piano, with Wyttenbach himself at the keyboard. Sequenza I, written by Luciano Berio in 1958, pushes the solo flute to play several lines at once in rapid leaps and flutter-tongued figures.
The two Japanese pieces, Somaksha by Yoritsune Matsudaira and Mei by Kazuo Fukushima, are for flute alone and leave wide spaces around each breathy, bending phrase. Issued by Wergo in 1969 in the series Große Interpreten neuer Musik, German edition.
