Chicago, and one of those independently produced records that exist because a bandleader decided the music was worth pressing regardless of whether anybody was going to distribute it. Marshall Vente led Project 9+ around the city for years, working a Latin-inflected large-ensemble jazz that pulled in local players and never made any concession to the national market, with Anna Dawson on vocals. Private-press jazz of this kind is where most of the actual musical life of any city is documented, and almost none of it ever reaches a second pressing.
